Planar's products incorporate the company's proprietary separator. The separator provides thermal shutdown to protect against severe environmental abuse.

The separator's thermal shutdown merchanism can be tuend to a particular temperature within the max allowable range, to meet customer specifications.

Planar's safety separator does not melt and short on further heating as do convention shutdown separators, but remains stable and non-conductive in excess of 150°C.

Overcharge

In addition Planar's safety separator provides unique protection against overcharge. The cells tolerate overcharge in excess of 300% without venting or thermal runaway, and the cells continue to operate after overcharge as the graph to the right demonstrates. This feature makes possible the use of the higher specific energy oxides instead of iron phosphate.
