The graph below illustrates the thermal shutdown characteristic of Planar's separator. The cell impedance increases dramatically at the designed temperature (here 90°C). Preventing further ionic transport hinders further reactions that could lead to a runaway situation.

The graph below shows the tunable shutdown feature of Planar’s separator. Here, the resistivity rises, similar to the test above, but demonstrates a complete conductivity shutdown at various tuned temperatures, 90 to 110°C.
